On Wednesday night Dundee played the 3rd match of their tour of Northern Ireland and Ireland.
This time it was off to The Oval (or Victoria Park for the fussy) to take on Irish Cup winners Glentoran FC.
Dundee played with an Argentinian trialist in goal (Alex Pompili (sp)??) and the French left back who had made a good impression in Portadown (Zaaboub).
The starting line up was trialist, McNally, Sancho, Mann, trialist, Brady, Smith, Jablonski, Larsen, Sutton and Lovell.
It was a fairly low key first half although the passing and movement was generally crisper than on Saturday. Chances though were at a premium and Glentoran had the better of them in the first half hour with ex Linfield man Chris Morgan having a couple of efforts cleared, once off the line by Brent Sancho and the other a decent save by the trialist keeper after a defensive lapse.
The Dees best attempt in the first half was a rasping 25 yd free kick by Zaaboub just on the stroke of half time which looked in all the way but missed just outside the keepers right post.
The second half continued in the same vein with both sides trying to get forward but neither having the vital cutting edge until 13 minutes from time when Neil Jablonski collected the ball on the edge of his own box and strode towards the half way line before releasing a great through ball for Steve Lovell to chase.
The Derby winning striker collected and calmly advanced on the keeper before slotting past and in at the keepers left hand post.
In a match of little importance Dundee had two injury scares with both Barry Smith and Steve Lovell requiring treatment, the latters injury providing an absurd moment when Glentoran took a corner with the referee fully 70 yards away near the other box ensuring Steve received his treatment. God only knows what the Glens number 14 was thinking!!
Dundee calmly held on to the end for a morale boosting victory having not played to a great standard.
The defence had been shaky once again and taking time to settle. Its clear that Bobby Mann will take some time to get used to a flat back four as opposed to being a first division sweeper of sorts. Brent Sancho again had a decent game but stands out simply because he needs to keep covering his defensive partner.
Best Dees on the night were Steve McNally who had some lung busting runs and the trialist Zaaboub who once again showed he can play in a Jonay Hernandez style. Perhaps the Frenchman is being lined up to replace Jonay rather than add to the squad?
Around 30 Dees were at the match and Peter Marr was also there. A guess at the crowd would be about 1000 providing a few quid for ex Glens star Gary Smyth who's testimonial match this was.
Saturday sees Dundee head to Ballymena and we'll be online with a round up on Sunday.
