In a thoroughly entertaining match it was honours even at Pittodrie as the home side fought back from a two-goal half-time deficit to claim a share of the spoils in a 3-3 thriller.
Aberdeen almost took the lead in the opening minutes when Leigh Hinds knocked Chris Clark's cross in to the path of Steve Tosh whose first-time effort from 18 yards flew narrowly over.
Dundee were awarded a penalty kick on 14 minutes when Michael Hart was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the area.
Lovell made an immaculate job of dispatching the resultant penalty beyond Peter Kjaer to open the scoring.
Aberdeen were almost back on level terms when Derek Young's header from Harts cross crashed off the upright with keeper Julian Speroni beaten.
Fabian Caballero then increased the visitors' lead as the Dons rearguard failed to clear the danger allowing the striker to drive home from around ten yards.
Derek Young again passed up a great chance on 31 minutes but he could not get his header on target from Hart's cross.
The Dons were back in business after 57 minutes when Jamie McAllister's cross was chested into the path of Sheerin by Derek Young for the latter to drive the ball home from 19 yards.
The Dons were now doing all the pressing and it came as no surprise when they levelled the match on 65 minutes, Clark threaded the ball into the area, picking out the run of Sheerin whose low drive beat Speroni at the far post.
The visitors almost shocked their hosts when Lee Wilkie headed over the bar from inside the six-yard box. Then again within 60 seconds, Gavin Rae's drive from the edge of the area went just beyond the post.
The Dons looked to have capped an excellent fightback as they went ahead on 81 minutes. Phil McGuire joined the attack climbed above the Dee defence to head home.
The lead was short-lived however as the visitors scored again on 82 minutes when Wilkie slid Caballero's cross beyond Kjaer to bring the sides level again.
