No, it isn't the start of any war. The balloon going up this afternoon was Dundee's hot air balloon. Inherited from Glasgow Rangers, it is inflated to a height that allows players to train beneath it and blows hot air on the grass below.
In a chat with Raymy Farningham today at a kids game at Gussie Park he told me the balloon was going up, supervised by the youth team, who it seems are quite expert at it.
When asked why it wasn't put up before the Livvy game with weather forecasts telling everyone but Dundee the temperatures were due to plummet on Saturday morning, he shrugged his shoulders. He honestly didn't know. He did say the park was like concrete on Saturday and would have made the game a farce.
And off he went, fearful the youth players might see his absence as a chance to use the balloon as a bouncy castle. "They're still just overgrown bairns."
In the past the balloon has been a cause for concern. It keeps the frost off the ground, yes. But once it's deflated on Saturday morning the condensation left on the grass can easily freeze over if the temperature's low, so it's no fool proof solution.
Let's hope the balloon ensures the game goes ahead no matter what the weather, this saturday, or more than the hot air dirigible will be deflated, to say the least.
