Without wishing to state the obvious i have to admit the lack of news over a budget for next season is worrying.
It may seem a touch early for thoughts to be turning to season 2012/13.Now that the promotion issue has been seetled and the dark blues know that they will be in the lower league for at least another season they should be.
There is purely no time like the present to get cracking and putting together next seasons team,as well as there being no good reason to wait,it shouldnt be forgotten that the first divison finishes in just over a fortnight, meaning that players and agents and if they can managers are already hard at work formulating their plans and considering their options for next season.
Thats why its been of a concern that when asked about his budget, dark blue boss Barry Smith has answered politely but evasively and always been keen tomove to another subject. It doesnt take a genius to workout thats because he hasnt yet been told how much he's getting, and when pressed on the subject,he has reluctantly aditted that he 's not yet in a posistion to offer anyone a new deals.
Thats worrrying-but saying so isnt an attack on the dundee board.
Just as should be the case with what the managers done, fans should appreciatethe directors, ceo scot gardiner and his predecessors have done to not only keep this club afloat but give it a chance of challenging at the top end of the divison.
Thats a task that shows no sign of getting any easier and i strongly expect what was a tight budget for this term willhave to be cut for next season,if that does prove tobe the case, then here is no shame in it,if the money isnt there its not there, and what dundee should never again do issuch circumstances is live beyond their means.Thats been done in the past with disasterous consequences and is something thats still being paid for today.
Wether it be a penny or a pound ,dundee should be letting their manager know how much he can spend.
