Former Dundee player John Cord, who died suddenly at the age of 45 was given a fitting farewell in the Western Cemetery this morning. A crowd of close on 500 attended, among them Bobby Glennie, former Dundee captain, who was a close friend. A floral tribute from Dundee F.C. was also visible.
In the early 70’s when I formed an Under-14 team I got the players together to decide on a name. At that time Dundee United had took part in a tournament in the USA and they played a team called the Dallas Tornadoes. John and others were taken by this name, so the Dens Tornadoes were born and I was the first Sunday Boys’ team manager John had at the age of 14. The Courier got that bit wrong.
John, who was a most promising player, went on to sign for Dundee under Tommy Gemmell, only for an untimely accident at work to cut short his career. He played for amateur and junior teams for many years and the turn out this morning showed how popular a guy he was.
