Dundee Football club will shortly embark on the first in a series of ground improvements over the coming months by brightening up the Bobby Cox Stand. The Dundee FC Supporters’ Society have been working closely with Operations Director Jim Thomson to determine how they can help to improve the aesthetics of Dens Park and are calling on their extensive list of volunteers to do their bit to help paint the town - or at least a small part of it - dark blue.
The dull breeze block walls will receive a dark blue make-over on Sunday, 3rd April, with experienced painters and decorators from local companies given their backing to the plan. The tradespeople will be doing their bit by using specialist equipment and expertise to paint the harder-to-reach corners of the stand, and the club are hoping the wider fanbase will support the initiative by donning overalls and turning up brush-in-hand.
DFCSS Volunteers Coordinator Kenny Valentine said many fans had already indicated their willingness to help out with general maintenance tasks around the ground, and called on anyone who has not yet registered as a volunteer but who would like to do their bit to help out next month.
“We want to make Dens Park a more enjoyable place to visit and, with the help of the fans, that’s what we’ll do,” he said. “It’s a great chance for people to come together, meet fellow Dundee fans and do their bit for the club. How many supporters can look around their club’s ground and say ‘see that? I did that’?
“This is the first major project to be undertaken since we launched the volunteers scheme some months ago. The response to the volunteers appeal was exceptional – more than 80 people came forward to offer their help on top of around 50 who already help Dundee out – and this will be a major part of taking the club forward.
“We’re in the process of contacting all the volunteers who said they’d be willing to help with maintenance and general tasks, but obviously we’d like to open this to the wider support as well. Refreshments and snacks will be provided and, if the day is anything like the recent snow-clearing efforts, then I’m sure the fans will actually really enjoy coming along and the feeling of togetherness of working with their fellow Dees.
“What the professional decorators are doing for us is fantastic and we’d like to say a massive thank you to them for all their help.”
The Bobby Cox Stand will be painted dark blue on Sunday, 3rd April. Kenny will be getting in touch with already-registered volunteers between now and then, but anyone else who would like to help out can email dfcssvolunteers@hotmail.co.uk or contact the club directly to register their interest.
Fans should turn up at the Bobby Cox Stand for an 11am start on the day, and bring a dust sheet and roller/masonry brush with them if possible.
