Ladbrokes Premiership side Dundee are favourites to record victory in Fife and have been tipped by some sections for cup success this season.
But Hartley maintains the Dark Blues are expecting nothing other than a tough tie against their lower league opponents.
"We will show Dunfermline every respect
That's the way it is in football," he said.
"They have made a very good start to the season
They will see us as a big club coming from the Scottish Premiership
"So we know we are in for a hard game and will have to be ready for it.
"Of course, we want to do well in the cup competitions this season
It would be great to have a run for the fans as well
"That is our aim but we know we have to get past Dunfermline first
There are no easy games in cup competitions and we don't expect this one to be either."
Dundee skipper Kevin Thomson will miss the match due to a calf problem.
Gary Harkins is free to play after his red card against Aberdeen in the 2-0 league defeat at Pittodrie at the weekend.
Dundee have no other fresh injury worries.
