George Harris talks to the tele

"I firmly believe this will be our year", new Society Chairman George Harris told The Evening Telegraph on Tuesday, as he discussed the Club, Manager Barry Smith, the Society and the role of the Dundee FC support in his first interview since taking the reins after Scott Glenday stepped down earlier this month.

"We've got a fantastic manager who has done a magnificent job right from the start.  He's working hard to build a squad and I believe the early signs are extremely positive", said George.

"If we can match that with off the field success, I genuinely believe this club could get to where it ought to be - the SPL.  That is everybody's aim at Dens and I am no different.  I love this club and I would love to see it at the top of Scottish football again."

George is well known for sharing his opinions, and on his Chairmanship of the Society, George discussed his own personal style and how he sees the way forward.  "I'll not sit on the fence" he continued, "if I have an opinion I'll share it.  If I need answers, I'll get them.  That's what I'll bring to the table on the fans' behalf, because that's what they are entitled to.  It's not an ego trip for me, because the club will be around long after I'm gone.

"It's about having the chance to do right by the club and the fans who have done so much to safeguard its existence".

On the contribution of the fans so far, which has been nothing short of incredible, George said "Give and take is the key thing.  The fans have done their bit for the club in the past and it's only right that the club should recognise that.  But at the same time we still need fans to carry on showing their support because we are majority shareholders.  That's what we wanted - and it's a responsibility we must live up to."

In an indication that he's keen to continue to develop relationships with the club board and the community at large, George added "As Chairman of the Society I want to work closely with the Football Club Board.  As majority shareholders, the fans expect that.  There are limits but I'll be looking to form a solid relationship with the Directors and the CEO, who area all working extremely hard and have the best interests of the club at heart."

Turning to the community at large, and the work that has been going on, not least at Dens on match days with the visit of 18 charities throughout the season, George added, "I feel the Society has made great strides over the last year in terms of engaging with the community.  That's something that I believe is absolutely crucial moving forward.  We need to engineer goodwill from the community towards the club and we need to capitalise on that as best we can.

"It's not something we should just expect.  We have to work for it.  But we have been doing that for a while and I believe it will ultimately pay dividends."
