Dundee are favourites to bring Paul Gascoigne to Tayside. A group of local businessmen have put together a package to help pay his wages and new sponsors Jini have also offered input to bring Paul to Dens.
Opposition for his signature comes in the form of 3rd Division Exeter City and SPL newcomers Partick Thistle.
The co-chairman of Exeter is non other than Uri Geller who is said to be using his mind powers to keep Gazza in England. Exeter's offer of £8,000 per week would seem the highest bid financially.
However Paul Gascoigne has said he's not interested in playing in the 3rd Division which would leave Dundee and Partick as favourites to land him.
Whether he arrives at Dens or not the topic "Gazza" has been the subject of many pub and work conversations. Even the most disinterested football workmate has had something to say about Paul Gascoigne. He's a household name all over the United Kingdom and beyond. The buzz surrounding his link with Dundee will be nothing to the hordes of media punters who will flock north if he does sign.
Ex Rangers and England striker Mark Hateley believes Dundee manager Jim Duffy could be the man to guide Paul to one final high in his career.
"Hateley said: "Scotland is still a good place to play and there are some good players here. Jim Duffy will know what he is all about and Paul could help get consistency out of some really talented players." Love him or loathe him I have a feeling Paul Gascoigne is about to swagger into Dens Park on a short term contract tying him to the club until January. After that he will move to the USA in time for their season beginning in the New Year.
For now, if he signs it should be fun. He's a character and he'll give us plenty of laughs and hopefully bags of excitement. As someone said "if you own a cinema you want the big picture on show in order to fill it. if Gazza's available, you'd be daft not to sign him." Open the curtains, break open the popcorn and bring on the entertainment.
